Sol Mayor Cerveceria - Madrid

Came to this place to have bocadillos and they were delicious. This place offers authentic Spanish food and everything here is great. Fried calamari is really good as well. This cervecería is located just a few steps from Puerta del Sol, so its location is convenient and easy to get to.

There are those who come to Madrid and stick to the touristy restaurants and bars on famous plazas and streets in search of an authentic cultural experience. Then there are those savvier visitors who venture into this magnificent place: Cerveceria Sol Mayor. I first stumbled upon this hidden gem ten years ago while studying abroad in Madrid. Ever since, I have always returned whenever I come back to this great city. If you truly want a real local culinary experience, look no further. Everything about this place is amazing. Once you enter, study the menu of raciones and tapas on the wall (it comes with pictures of the dishes). Once you’ve made your picks, walk up to the bar and order. Everything is freshly cooked for you right after you order. The waiters are cheerful, attentive and passionate about what they do. So, try not to be shocked by the manner in which the waiters communicate to the kitchen staff what you’ve ordered. They almost scream their lungs out, yelling out your order to the kitchen staff— this is part of the cultural experience that I thoroughly enjoy each time. As for the food, the croquetas de jamón are easily the tastiest ones I’ve ever tried anywhere. And trust me, as a self-proclaimed croqueta connoisseur, I know my way around croquetas. Other treats for your taste buds are the patatas bravas or alioli, the bacalao with tomato, and the fried chorizo. But in reality, every single dish is a true culinary treat— I’ve tried them all. You don’t need to worry about the price, as everything is extremely cheap. So just take a stab at something you like and let your taste buds do the rest. All in all, this is a delightful Madrid experience that you should savor. I know you’ll have the same experience I first had ten years ago that has made me want to come back to Cerveceria Sol Mayor every time I’m in the city. Pay them a visit while in Madrid—you won’t be disappointed.

We were wandering Madrid and hungry. We happened upon this fun fast food place. The three guys were so very friendly and accommodating. We sat at the bar, had a drink and few tapas and left happy. It was early and not busy. They made us feel that maybe Madrid wasn't just a big impersonal city. The food was basic tapas but tasty.
